Wayne Barrett, the founder of Barrett Architect Inc., has a wealth of experience and expertise in the field of architecture, with a unique blend of form, function, and building science. His education from Ryerson University in building technology and McGill University in urban and building design has provided a solid foundation for his work in the industry.
Wayne has been a pioneer and adopter of green building design since the 1970s, being involved in various residential and commercial solar demonstration and energy conservation projects during his time at John Hix Architect. As the Partner-in-charge of production at Zippan + Barrett Architects Inc., Wayne was responsible for overseeing all projects from conceptual design to commissioning, including award-winning projects such as The Mansions of Mississauga condominiums, the Sherwood Forest Shopping Village (which won the ICS international award), and the Esprit Condominiums.
In addition to his work in Canada, Wayne also had international experience, working in strategic alliance with The Institute for the Study and Application of Integrated Development in African countries from 1980 to 1984. He introduced sustainable building techniques, such as mud brick dome and vault construction for roof structures, to the southern Sahara, which has been recognized as one of the most successful sustainable demonstration projects in Africa.
Wayne has also been involved in various leadership roles within the architecture and construction industry. He has served as President at Archon Developments Inc., providing design-build and construction management services on commercial, industrial, and residential projects. He has been a Director of Construction at Grupo Archondes S.A. de C.V., a Mexican partner company to Archon Developments, where he was involved in the development and construction of low-cost housing units in Mexico City and Tijuana utilizing a systemized concrete modular manufacturing process.
In addition to his professional experience, Wayne has also been involved in academia, teaching design and building construction at Ryerson University, and being a guest lecturer on topics such as Energy Conservation, Construction Contracts, Building Codes, and Construction Methodology domestically and abroad.
Wayne has also been actively involved in non-profit organizations, serving as a board director and as Chair of the Board and Board of Governors at the Mississauga Board of Trade. His extensive experience and leadership in the industry demonstrate his commitment to advancing the field of architecture, sustainability, and community involvement.
