Brooke MacKenzie is a Counsel at St. Lawrence Barristers PC, specializing in civil and regulatory litigation with a focus on professional responsibility and liability issues, health law, and appellate advocacy. She has significant experience in appeals, having appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada, Court of Appeal for Ontario, Federal Court of Appeal, and Divisional Court multiple times.
Brooke represents lawyers, paralegals, and health professionals in regulatory or disciplinary issues and provides legal opinions and advice on professional obligations, including issues related to client confidentiality and privilege, law practice management and ownership, and duties when lawyers transfer firms.
Brooke’s expertise in disqualification motions and conflicts of interest allegations is demonstrated through her paper “Explaining Disqualification: An Empirical Review of Motions for the Removal of Counsel,” which was published in the Queen’s Law Journal and earned her the OBA Foundation Chief Justice of Ontario Fellowship in Legal Ethics and Professionalism.
Brooke’s writing on professional responsibility, tort law, and civil procedure has been published in various journals, including the Supreme Court Law Review, Annual Review of Civil Litigation, and Canadian Bar Review. Her LL.M. thesis, “Effecting a culture shift: An empirical review of Ontario’s summary judgment reforms,” was published in the Osgoode Hall Law Journal in 2017. Additionally, she has authored two chapters on civil appeals in Civil Procedure and Practice in Ontario.
