Ella Lily Janet Bernhard is a lawyer who has focused her practice on corporate, commercial, and family law since 1982. She advises private, public, and charitable groups in Canada and internationally, particularly in high-value and complex financial proceedings that arise from commercial and family breakdowns. Her practice has a strong international element, and she has extensive experience in jurisdictional disputes.

Ella has appeared in all levels of court in Ontario, including the Ontario Court of Appeal, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, and the Ontario Court of Justice (Family Division), and has been recognized for her legal expertise. She has also been appointed as a Dispute Resolution Officer of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in Toronto. Her clients have praised her deep subject matter knowledge, excellent judgment, and first-rate rapport with clients.

In addition to appearing in court, Ella also participates in alternative dispute resolution proceedings such as mediation and arbitration. She completed the advanced family mediation course at the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1999, ranking first in her class, and is a trained arbitrator and qualified under current legislation to serve as either an arbitrator or mediator and to perform domestic screening for violence.

Ella is also active in continuing legal education through the Ontario Bar Association and Advocates’ Society, and she lectures in law to various interest groups and lawyers. She is a member of several legal organizations, including the AFCC, the CBA, and OBA, and a former member of the American Trial Lawyers Association and a former director of CANFAR (the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research).

Ella’s leadership and strategic skills have been honed over the years, having been a partner at a former firm since the age of 29 and now running her own enterprise. She is frequently sought out by leading national and international print and broadcast media outlets, including the CBC in Toronto, for her opinion and commentary on legal issues.
