Michael Engel is a University of Toronto (St. Michael’s College) graduate and obtained his law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1979. He articled for renowned counsel, Arthur Maloney, Q.C. and then worked as an Assistant Crown Attorney at the Ministry of the Attorney General for eight years at the Old City Hall, the busiest courthouse in Canada.

During his tenure as a Crown Attorney, Mr. Engel prosecuted a wide variety of criminal cases, including high-profile ones involving homicides, robberies, frauds, and sexual assaults. He also argued several appeals and conducted multiple coroner’s inquests.

In 1988, Mr. Engel switched to private practice, exclusively handling criminal defense cases. Over the last thirty years, he has defended clients against a range of charges and argued cases at all levels of court in Ontario. In recent years, his practice has focused entirely on DUI defense cases.

Apart from his busy trial practice, Mr. Engel has argued many “summary conviction” appeals in various Superior Courts throughout the province. He has also successfully argued “indictable” appeals before the Ontario Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada.
