Ron earned his Juris Doctor (JD) degree at Osgoode Hall Law School of York University. During law school, Ron was selected as a caseworker for the Osgoode Hall Innocence Project, which sparked his interest in the criminal justice system. He realized that wrongful convictions occurred due to a variety of causes, including systemic racism, police misconduct, and ineffective lawyering. With an undergraduate degree in Life Sciences from McMaster University, Ron understood the basic principle of science to always question the methods used to draw certain conclusions. He offered his services to the Innocence Project by identifying flaws in the prosecutor’s cases, particularly in the area of forensic evidence. In his re-investigations, Ron appealed to the Federal Minister of Justice on the basis of fresh evidence, such as third-party DNA uncovered through sequencing technology that was not available at trial.
